Synthesise

When we think about the colonists living in America, we can see that they moved away from Europe to gain their own independence. Although the colonists were proud to be British, but saw America as an opportunity land. They wanted to form a self government. The colonists wanted to run things their own way for a change. They believed that if they govern themselves, there was a huge possibility of a brighter future for the colonists. Becoming independent was their first step to success.

As for the British living in Europe, they believed that the colonists were no longer British, but American. Even though they did not see the colonists as the same, they still protected the colonists from the French and traded goods with them. The King and Parliament took great care of the colonists living in America. As time passed the colonists self government fell apart. With the colonists taking supplies from Britain, the parliament realized that shipping goods has become too expensive. I believe that the colonists became too expensive to supply for as time passed by. So, Parliament developed the Stamp Act. The colonists were being taxed on almost everything. Parliament wanted to take control and govern the colonists to become an empire. Colonists of course were upset and “rebelled” towards the Stamp Act. Colonial elites believed that the Stamp Act was an ill-judged measure. From the chaos the colonists stirred up, the English repealed the Stamp Act. From what I have heard, "pride is political liberty".

Essay #1 Reflection

Based on my first essay, I realized that writing has levels of difficulties. In school, I have always learned to a format of a 5-Paragraph essay. What really made my writing difficult was to adapt to the They Say/I Say format. My writing process was a total different experience. I did not start on the introduction first but on my body paragraph which was something different from what I would normally do. This new format has taught me so much, and I feel like i experienced a great learning experience. Another tip that I learned is, the writing process could be as free as making a conversation with someone. Writing does not always need to be fact based with hard evidence. My first essay was writing about history. When i wrote about Bacon's Rebellion, I slowly realized that I did not need to only write down facts. There are more ways to bring out the Main Idea about the historical happenings. History can be written with your feelings and ideas towards the situation. Having quotes wont make your paper, your ideas and inputs does. Although history does need to be fact based, you could always add your own expressions into your writing. Overall, this paper on Bacon's Rebellion has taught me so much about formatting in general. There is no wrong or right way about writing, as long as you believe in your work, you are going on the right path.

Bacon's Rebellion Final

In the 1600s, many people had different views towards people of different skin. Bacon’s Rebellion is a perfect example of prejudice beliefs towards the Natives. I believe that the fuse on Bacon’s Rebellion sparked from bias feelings towards the Natives. From Nathaniel Bacon Jr.’s influential actions, others began to join in on the rebellion. Bacon’s actions towards the Natives were wrong. The actions made was the first step towards the downfall of the colony. Nathaniel Bacon viewed the Natives as the enemies which brought upon the rebellion.

Bacon’s Rebellion was a rebellion that created conflict between the Natives and the colonists in Virginia. This rebellion was known as “an uprising of angry, poor colonists against [. . .] the Indians (Zinn). Nathaniel Bacon Jr. was looked upon by the colonists as a strong leader that could help the poor colonists with their financial issues. However, Bacon saw the Natives as the common enemy and wanted all Natives banned from Virginia. Bacon’s malevolent feelings toward the Natives pushed himself to form a group of people living in the colony to rebel towards the Natives. Bacon decided to ban the Natives from the colony. Bacon took advantage of the Natives and the colonists in order to get his way. Taking advantage of innocent vulnerable human beings is wrong and it gives other people the wrong message. He explained to the colonists that if all of the Natives were out of the colonial territory, that all will live peacefully and all issues will be resolved. Bacon “found the Indians in all places unwilling to [leave and] […], they [. . .] were forced to go [quiet] […] southward”(Document#21). With the Natives sent away, Bacon felt like he dominated them and gained more power over the colonists. He felt as if he has gained so much power that slowly he could change every single Virginian Colonists to go with his plan and have loyal followers behind him. The main reason for Bacon sending the Natives away is because he wanted to take all of their land and use it for himself. Bacon is a selfish man that believed he could gained power over the Natives and take control over them . From Bacon’s actions, more damage was done than resolved.

Bacon started to build a title for himself and he started to believe that he could have his way and make the colonists believe his words. For three months, Bacon was at war with the Natives. However, Bacon saw how unpleased his followers became with Bacon targeting the Natives and not the rich so, Bacon told his followers a negotiation. He promised the poor colonists that they will as well rebel towards the rich. The colonists did not believe that the natives had anything to do with the economy’s downfall. Natives lived with a struggle and worked hard to be where they were standing. The Colonists believed that the rich was much more privileged and did not have to live hard during the down fall of the economy. Bacon “probably cared more about fighting Indians than about helping the poor”(Zinn). “Bacon’s extra-legal army bent on revenge [by] attack[ing] the peaceful [innocent] Indian Village” (Puglisi). Bacon and his followers burned down houses, and attacked innocent Natives that were living in the colony. Bacon’s manipulative words persuaded his followers into believing that the Natives did in deed take part of the downfall for the economy. His twisted words made the colonists believe that they were suffering because of the Native’s contributions towards the community. With Bacon’s manipulative, malevolent behaviors, Governor William Berkeley took immediate attention to Bacon and took matters into his own hands.

Governor Berkeley felt differently towards the Natives. He believed that the colonists should leave the Natives alone and not create a war between the colonists and the Natives. However, Bacon believed “I am sure if the Indians were not cowards, they might have destroyed all the upper plantations and killed all the people upon them”(Document #9). With Bacon pursuing in the rebellion, “the rebellion convulsed Chesapeake politics and society, leaving in its wake death, destruction, and a legacy of hostility between the great planters and their poorer neighbors”(The American Promise, p.91). Bacon’s actions only brought pain and sufferings into the colony. What Bacon desired to look at was the fact that if he does not take action, the Natives would make a disaster in the colony. From Bacon’s actions, it provokes the Natives to get back at the colony for revenge . But, when Bacon and his followers finally “gained the upper hand [by] capturing and murdering the old chief”(The American Promise, p.91), total chaos struck the colony. Governor Berkeley was outraged and a treaty was made. The madness of the fighting had to be put to a stop. The treaty states, “that the government tried to maintain for the next thirty years [and] the Indians relinquished all claims to land already settle by the English” (The American Promise, p.91). However, the poor colonists that were associated with Bacon did not keep to the treaty. More and more servants, poor colonists, and freed servants kept surfacing, and settled on the Native’s territory which then the treaty broke. Throughout the 1660s and 1670s, the Natives and colonists stayed at war against each other. Fighting back was the only way for the Natives to make their statement. They were not going anywhere and Bacon would have to deal with the fact. However, Bacon on the other hand, told the government, “[that] the protected and Darling Indians Design[ed] not only to ruine and extirpate all Indians in Generall but all Manner of Trade and Commerce with them”(The American Promise, p.91). Extirpating the Natives was a perfect excuse to keep the Natives away for good.

Berkeley “pronounced Bacon a[s] a rebel, [and] threatened to punish him for treason”(Them American Promise, p.91) but, he could trick Bacon into a new election for the House of Burgesses. What Berkeley did not know is that Bacon’s name has gained a title and became very popular within the colony. Bacon has also gained many loyal followers that shall always be by Bacon’s side. The elections blew up at Berkeley and “was replaced by local leaders including Bacon”(92). Bacon has several followers and now he also has the power of the legislation. His malevolent feelings towards the Natives started to surface with the new laws made within the colony. Since Bacon has the power, he believed that he might as well use it to get what he wants. Having Bacon in the House of Burgesses can cause much chaos in the colony. With all his power, “Bacon’s forces fought the Indians sacked the grandees’ plantations, and attacked Jamestown”(The American Promise, p.92). Bacon’s actions were meaningless, and destructive. Bacons actions only led to more problems. None of his actions were made to help change the living environment for the poor colonists. The only reason why the rebellion has been going on for so long is because Bacon was not satisfied until every Native in Virginia were demolished. In the middle of the rebellion, Bacon unexpectedly died. “ The rebellion didn’t last long after that”(Zinn). The colonists did not know what to do or where to go after Bacon’s death. Since they no longer had Bacons manipulative input on situations, the colonists just stopped rebelling. Now that Bacon is gone, the colonists slowly realized that fighting with the Natives was pointless. However, the colonists still believed that the Natives needed to live away from the colony so that everyone could live safe. "The Indians had their land seized by white frontiersmen”(Zinn). They still treated the Natives as a problem. Even after Bacon’s death, the colonist’s feelings towards the Natives were not at great terms. Bacon has truly impacted the views and lives of the colonists.

Like Bacon’s Rebellion, if you judge by the different characteristics in a person’s appearance, you will walk down the road of regret and shame. If you look at the today, there are children and even adults who has bias views towards others. From those views, many people of other races have been killed or beat. As a result, Bacon’s Rebellion was a clear example of prejudice and bias views that were happening during the 1600s. Bacon’s Rebellion clearly impacted history for generations. The relationship between the Natives and Colonists will always be known as a never ending fight. Nathaniel Bacon has truly impacted the views of the colonists and changed the colonization process for the Natives in Virginia. Nathaniel Bacon’s actions will always be remembered as strong bias beliefs targeted only towards Natives.

Equiano

What Equiano went through, and saw was unimaginable. Putting hundreds to people in a ship for months is wrong and hurting them for not eating or for doing nothing is even more wrong. The images and experience that Equiano went through is to hard to imagine. Slave trade should have never happened. Just because of their color, that does not the white colonists could treat someone like this. They probably treated pack mule better than the slaves. What the colonists do not realize is that the slaves are people as well. If you hit them, they will cry and if you cut them they will bleed just like everyone else. When I observed the pictures of what Equiano saw when he was first taken away from his home, the first thing that came to my mind was how could they possibly put all these people in a tiny ship. From inside the ship (lower deck), that picture reminded me of the holocaust. Everyone was so skinny, stacked on top of each other, and was just looking so depressed as if they wanted someone to kill them and take them out of their misery. There was absolutely no room to even get up and walk about 1 feet. What the slave traders did was inhumane. How could a person do something so horrible, disgusting, and wrong. And most importantly, how could others let this from happening. If the colonists did something, they could have slowed down the process of slave trades. Owning slaves in general is wrong, and the cruelty that was done to the innocent beings was not tolerable in any standards.

Quote 1 “The definition which the scripture gives us of love is this: ‘Love is the bond of perfection.’ [I]t is a bond or ligament. . . . There is no body but consists of parts and that which each part so contiguous to others as thereby they do mutually participate with each other, both in strength and infirmity, in pleasure and pain. . . . Christ and his church make one body. The several parts of this body, considered apart before they were united, were disproportionate and as much disordering as so many contrary qualities or elements, [however, when united], it is become the most perfect and best proportioned body in the world[.]”

In this quote, I believe that Winthrop is tell us readers that being united and together is the key concept. The body is being represented to show how things should come together like a whole body and become one colony so to speak. When the colony is strong in religion, economy and just strong as one, they become one strong body . When they work together to create the colony, they are showing how they can be a strong colony as one.

Quote 2 “Whatsoever we did or ought to have done when we lived in England, the same must we do, and more also, where we go.”

I believe this quote means that the colony wants to improve more. When it states, “ whatsoever we did or ought to have done when we lived in England”, this shows me the reader that the colonist was thinking back and realized that when they lived in England, they wanted to do better and now they want to change those mistakes and improve as a colony. Most importantly, when it states “the same must we do, and more also, where we go”, shows readers that they would like to spread their newer ideas and motivate others in religion, and about colonization.

Quote 3 “Thus stands the cause between God and us. We are entered into covenant with him for this work. We have taken out a commission, the Lord hath given us leave to draw our own articles. We have professed to enterprise these actions . . . . Now if the Lord shall please to hear us, and bring us in peace to the place we desire, then hath he ratified this covenant and sealed our commission, [and] will expect a strict performance of the articles contained in it.”

I believe that this quote tells us readers that the Puritans believed that they were like on a mission for God’s work. They were sent to purify the colony and to create a pure world. The Puritans believed that if they spread their religion, it will cause peace and purity and that God will be ecstatic with their actions and that they will be rewarded when they die, they will be sent to heaven with God.

Quote 4 “[W]hen he shall make us a praise and glory that men shall say of succeeding [colonies], ‘the Lord make it like that of New England.’ For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us[.]”

In this quote, I believe that Winthrop is giving us readers to be more religious. First of all, I believe that this quote means, when you live in the city upon a hill, it shows how you want to be close to God. The higher you are elevated, the closer you would feel with God. Also, this quote could mean to be a key example because where it states, “ the eyes of all people are upon us” tells us the readers that people are looking up to them and sort of appreciate them more.

Library Search

My experience with JSTOR was a little frustrated. When I would type in the key word, what I'm looking for does not always come up. Not only does it not come up but, articles and magazine clips of things I did not even want came up instead. But, other than that little mishap, JSTOR is a very useful source and I could see myself using it for any essay or writing piece that I would be doing. During my search on JSTOR, I would type in the first key word "Bacon's Rebellion" and then my second key word would be "Indians" and a list of about 9 or 10 different pages of articles came up. In these articles I would read of conflicts between the English people and the Natives during Bacon's Rebellion and I would also find old worlds and new worlds that the Natives lived in and how their land changed from old to new. On my second search, I typed in "Virginia" for my first key word and for my second key word, I typed in "Bacon's Rebellion". With these key words, articles of about 20-25 pages came up. One article that I really enjoyed informed me about the history of Bacon's Rebellion in Virginia, but what makes this piece different from all the other pieces on Bacon's Rebellion is that, this article was more in depth and explained why and what happened in depth and, this article also informed me about the in depth situation between the Governor and the Rebel. When I use JSTOR in the future, I will be more specific in the dates, years, title, and especially in my key word(s) to get exactly what I am looking for.

National College Fair

1. Public College:
University of Washington

2.Private College:
St. John University

3. Rural College:
Western Trinity University

4. A traditional college:
Michigan State University

5. A college that I was most interested in was University of Washington in Seattle. University of Seattle caught my eye because firstly, its near home and I will be close to family and friends. Secondly, University of Washington is also known for their medical and their pre-dentistry programs. University of Washington was on the top 20 colleges for the pre-medical and pre-dentistry program.

6. I attended a workshop that helps you with your college essay. This workshop taught me the importance of the Essay. The workshop taught me:
-To write only about you.
-Write the importance of you essay.
-Speak formal.
-Seem Professional.
-Make it a personal statement. Make the first impression good.
-Stay on topic.
-Be yourself and remember to present yourself on paper.
-Let them know who YOU are that is the key point of the Essay.
-Most importantly, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!!!

7. Attending the National College Fair was a great learning experience for me as an individual. The most information that was most useful to me was the workshop. In the workshop, I learned how to write an essay, and the importance of an essay. Another useful information that I learned is the general score of the SAT and ACT test, and most importantly, what school actually has a pre-dentistry program. Although I already asked multiple questions at the fair, I still wonder which school will accept early college programs like PSEC and Running Start. For the next phase of my education and career planning process is, to work harder at math since math has to be a key component to become an orthodontist. I will also be studying more long and work harder on my SAT and ACT scores. Lastly, I will work my way into getting some sort of sccholarship, and start to sommunicate with the colleges I have admired from the National College Fair.

They Say 2: Bacon's Rebellion

Based on what I have read, Bacon's Rebellion was basically about the poor getting their revenge to the rich and to the Natives. In the Howard Zinn document, he is telling us readers how and why the colonists decided to rebel. The rebellion "was an uprising of angry, poor colonists against two groups they saw as their enemies. One was the Indians. The other was the colonists' own rich and privileged leaders"(35). The less fortunate felt like they were being cheated and that the rich and the Natives were being privileged for no transparent reason. As for others like Bacon, "[they] cared more about fighting Indians than about helping the poor"(37). When Bacon brought his ideas to the council, Berkeley denied his plan and Bacon and the other colonists felt betrayed. What Bacon wanted was "the colony's leaders to fight the Indians, but the politicians and big landowners who ran the colony wouldn't fight [...] because they were using some of the Indians as spies and allies against the others" (36, Zinn). Those who were living well did not have any issues towards the Indians living in Virginia.

From Berkeley's actions, Bacon and his followers "attacked the peaceful Indian village"(78,Puglisi). After Bacon attacked the neighboring Indians, it became a statues of colonists versus Indians. Indians felt threatened by the colonists attack. So, "Opechancanough, the Algonquian chief who had lead the Indian uprising of 1622 in Virginia, mounted another surprise attack in 1644 and killed about five hundred Virginia colonists in two days"(91). The Indians and the colonists fought for nearly two years and all that fighting led up to the colonists "gain[ing] the upper hand, capturing and murdering the old chief"(91). No matter what the Indians did, the colonists always had the higher advantages and gained more than expected. Once the treaty has been made, the Chesapeake population did not grow but, the policy worked on maintaining the peace between colonist and Indians.

Unfortunately, "the land-hungry colonists, especially [the] poor"(91) had to free their servants. More and more colonists had to let go of their servants and slowly was in desperate need of land. The colonists broke the treaty and went onto Indian territory to settle. Since the treaty had broke, the Indians flared in wrath and showed their emotions in violence. The colonists looked to their dear faithful leader Bacon for help and he started to show the colonists that the real enemies are "the Indians and the colonial rulers in Jamestown"(91). From this revolting action, "[Berkeley] called for [a] new elections of burgesses"(92). What Berkeley did not think of is, all of the old burgesses were voted off of office and were now replaced by other local leader which also included Bacon. After Bacon has the power of the legislature, he could change what he liked and what he did not like. Bacon had "[fought] for three months, [and] Bacon's forces fought the Indians, sacked the grandees' plantations, and attacked Jamestown"(92). Bacon is the worst thing that could ever happen in Virginia.

Unexpectedly, Bacon died at the age of twenty-two. Once Bacon died, so did the rebellion. Berkeley started to gain power again, and things started to come back into order. Berkeley ended up killing twenty-three rebel leaders, took all weapons away from the rebels and returned the servants and slaves back to their masters. Things started to clear up once again in Virginia. As for the economy, " [t]he frontiersmen were taxed and controlled by the rich upper classes in Jamestown. And the whole colony, rich and poor, was being used by England. The colonists grew tobacco to sell to England"(38,Zinn). The king of England made a humongous profit from the colonies in Virginia. In the eighteenth century, the population grew to about a million and a half. Factories , agriculture, shiping and trading grew. From Bacon's Rebellion, we have all learned that "the language of liberty and equaliity"(51,Zinn) is the best tool of all.

Bacon clearly had prejudice views towards the Indians and his followers followed.

Political Economy of the Body

" [T]he body is. . . directly involved in a political field; power relations have an immediate hold upon it; they invest it, mark it, train it, torture it, force it to carry out tasks, no perfection ceremonies, to emit signs" (25).

I believe that this quote is about how slaves were being treated. Where it states, "they invested it, marked it. . . train it", it shows us the readers how the slave masters thought of their slaves. The slave masters would have to teach and train their slaves to their perfection. This quote also shows how much power the master has against his/her slave. For example, where it states, "involved in a political field; power relations have an immediate hold upon it", this shows the perfect example of the relationship of master and slave. The master has the immediate power and the slave has absolutely no power.

"[I]t is largely as a force of production that the body is invested with relations of power and domination; but, on the other hand, its constitution as labour power is possible only if it is caught up in a system of subjection. . . the body becomes a useful force only if it is both a productive body and a subjected body" (26).

In this quote, it tells us the readers what a slave represents. In the first line, "productions that the body is invested with relations of power and domination", this shows how investments that are made on slaves shows others that you have the power and you dominate your slave. This quote also tells us what slaves bodies are only good for. For example, " The body becomes a useful force only if it is both a productive body and a subjected body", this shows an example of what a majority of people though of slaves. Slaves bodies are only useful if they have a great work ethic and if they work well, fast and willingly.

"In the darkest region of the political field the condemned man represents the symmetrical, inverted figure of the king"

I believe that this quote represents a condemned man as the figure of the king. As we all know, a king is not a condemned man but, a king could have his moments. Foucault tries to tell us readers that the condemned man represents the king when he uses the workds symmetrical and inverted figure of the king.

American Tobacco and European Consumers

In the seventeenth –century, tobacco became a necessity to everyday life. The Chesapeake colonies first started to grow the tobacco and eventually started to double the crops. In the East, many Europeans wanted tobacco but others like King James found Tobacco repulsive. The Spaniards were the firsts to bring tobacco into Europe. At first, many physicians believed that tobacco was a drug or a holy herb that could cure diseases and keep you healthy. Europeans soon became addicted to tobacco and in the 1700 England had imported about 40 millions pounds of tobacco and from the multiplied size of tobacco, prices increased. From tobacco many new industries and social life began to surface. Pipes were being made and tins or boxes were also being made in order to hold the tobacco. Tobacco was also used other than smoking. Tobacco was also used by chewing, sniffing, and drinking. In conclusion, tobacco became a key factor to everyday life for Europeans and changed European living.
