Background Information:
I. Nathaniel Bacon was a wealthy English man that lived in a colony in Virginia.
--A. He believed that the Natives should not be living in Virginia.
----1. But, he wanted to take the land from the Natives.
------a. Bacon brought chaos into Virginia by starting a rebellion against the Natives and the rich.
Thesis:
Nathaniel Bacon viewed the Natives as enemies which brought upon the rebellion
Body/Discussion:
II. Bacon went against the goverment and formed a group of people to rebel towards the Natives and the rich.
---A. However, Bacon's interests was not on helping the poor get what they wanted. Instead, Bacon "probably cared more about fighting Indians than about helping the poor"(Zinn).
-----1. The followers of Bacon became unpleased with Bacon and his actions, and felt more wrath towards the Natives which made "Bacon's extra-legal army bent on revenge [by] attack[ing] the peaceful [innocent] Indian Village" (Puglisi).
-------2. Bacon and his followers burned down houses, and attacked innocent Natives that were living in the colony.
--------a. Once governor William Berkeley heard of this madness, he knew he had to change something.
III. Berkeley had an idea of tricking Bacon with a new election of burgesses.
----A. What Berkeley did not know is that Bacon has became very popular and has gained much power to his name within the colony.
------1. The election blew up in Berkeley's face, and " was replaced by local leaders, including Bacon"(92).
--------a. With Bacon, who has several followers, have the power of the legislation, felt like he has all the power started to form laws within the colony.
----------B. Bacon once again seeked the Natives as the enemy and wanted all of the Natives to be eliminated.
------------1. With all his power, "Bacon's forces fought the Indians sacked the grandees' plantations, and attacked Jamestown"(92).
--------------C. None of Bacon's actions are making a positive effect towards the colony.
----------------1. Bacon just wanted all of the Natives gone from Virginia.
IV. With Bacon having power, he decided to keep the Natives away from the colony.
--A. Bacon "found the Indians in all places unwilling to assist us against the common enemy [the Susquehannocks], they[...] were forced to go quite out of our way Southward"(Document#21).
----1. With the Natives sent away, Bacon felt like he dominated the Natives and the colonists.
------a. Bacon sent the Natives away so that he could have all of the land to himself.
--------b. The only interest he had for the colony was to demolish all the Natives in Virginia.
----------1. His actions may have pleased himself but, Bacon has caused much damage to the colony.
